The United States Department of Energy proposed on December 17th energy efficiency standards (“standards”) for new commercial rooftop air conditioners.
The National Resources Defense Council issued a news release regarding the standards and stated they will cover new rooftop units found on low-rise buildings like hospitals, schools, and big box stores.
The American Council for Energy – Efficient Economy states that the standards would reduce commercial rooftop air conditioner energy use by about 30%.
The proposed standards would mandate that commercial air conditioners and heat pumps certify performance using the Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio metric. The metric measures the equipment’s performance during varied operating conditions.
The proposed standards would become effective in two stages (2018 and 2023).
