United States Senators John Curtis (Utah) and John Hickenlooper (Colorado) have introduced the Methane Monitoring Science Act (“Act”).
They describe the Act as bipartisan legislation to help ensure that advances in American science and technology are effectively leveraged to:
- Improve understanding of methane emissions.
- Support domestic energy producers.
- Strengthen U.S. energy security.
Key requirements in the Act include:
- Develop a coordinated federal science strategy to assess current and future methane monitoring, detection, and quantification technologies;
- Support research and development by allowing NASA to use the strategy to inform future R&D planning; and
- Make methane information more useful to non-federal stakeholders, including state and local governments, academia, nonprofits, and American oil and natural gas producers.
