The Arkansas Water Resources Center (“AWRC”) has announced the next Arkansas Water Webinar hosted by the Arkansas Water Resources Center.
Associate Professor Hal Halverson in the Department of Biology at the University of Central Arkansas is described as presenting his team’s:
…findings from their long-term monitoring of Brewer Lake, and how scientist’s collaboration with a water utility can advance source water protection in the long-term.
The AWRC flyer described Brewer Lake as a drinking water reservoir serving more than 80,000 people in Central Arkansas. The organization further notes that in recent years:
…the lake has experienced occasional harmful algal blooms and seasonal water- quality issues, including taste and odor.
Professor Halvorson’s team is stated to have monitored the lake’s water quality year-round since 2019 tracking:
- Nutrient Levels
- Water chemistry
- Taste-and-odor compounds.
Professor Halvorson’s team examined:
- How nutrients from the surrounding watershed enter the lake
- How sediment at the lake’s bottom can release nutrients back into the water.
The webinar will include an explanation of:
- How seasonal changes in lake mixing and stratification drive shifts in water quality;
- How the team’s findings have led to practical outcomes (including improvements to drinking water treatment and the development of the watershed management plan for Brewer Lake).
The Arkansas Water Webinars are sponsored by AWRC and its state water partners which include:
- Arkansas Department of Agriculture
- The Arkans Forest and Drinking Water Collaborative
- Beaver Watershed Alliance
- Illinois River Watershed Partnership
