The Beaver Watershed Alliance and Nature Conservancy are holding an event titled Karst Learning & Field Day.
The event will be held on October 17th from 10 a.m. to noon in Huntsville, Arkansas.
Karst is a type of landscape where the dissolving of the bedrock has created sinkholes, sinking streams, caves, springs, and other characteristic features. It is associated with soluble rock types such as limestone, marble, and gypsum.
In general, a typical Karst landscape forms when much of the water falling on the surface interacts with and enters the subsurface through cracks, fractures, and holes that have been dissolved in the bedrock. After travelling underground, the water is then discharged from springs. Some of these springs are cave entrances.
The Field Day will include special guest speaker Mike Slay who is scheduled to discuss underground geology and the impacts on Ozark habitats. Subsequent to that discussion there will be what is described as:
… a hands-on demonstration planting karst-friendly native vegetation along local streams and creeks.
The brochure for the Field Day notes that it will provide:
… simple ways your land or backyard stewardship can help protect unique wildlife habitats and local resources…
The Field Day is free and lunch is included. However, space is stated to be limited and RSVPs are required. To register and find more information, email @beaverwatershedalliance.org or text/call 479-750-8007.
