The Arkansas Department of Energy & Environment – Division of Environmental Quality issued an August 26th news release stating that the Arkansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Compact Commission (“Commission”) Annual Meeting has been scheduled for September 22-23.
The meeting will be held at the Cherokee Hotel & Casino in West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma.
Compacts are written agreements (i.e., “contracts”) among or between states addressing interstate waters which have been approved by the United States Congress. They are enacted in the federal statutes as well as the statutes of each of the agreeing states.
The Arkansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Compact (“Compact”) provides for the equitable apportionment of the Arkansas River between the states of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The stated objectives of the Compact include:
- Providing an entity for the administration of the water apportionment agreed to by the states
- Describing which state may use specific waters
- Promoting the orderly development of the river
- Encourage the maintenance of an active pollution abatement program in the two states
The Commission’s annual meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. on September 22nd. Committees referenced in the news release that will meet on September 22nd include:
- Environmental and Natural Resources Committee
- Engineering Committee
- Budget Committee
- Legal Committee
The Commission meeting itself is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on September 23rd. Agenda items will include:
