H.R. 1687, the Open Fuel Standard Act 2011 was recently introduced in the US House of Representatives. It's goal is stated to be the enabling of fuel competition in the United States and reducing the strategic importance of oil to the United States. The legislation requires that 50% of automobiles made in 2014, 80% in 2016, and 95% in 2017 be manufactured to also run on non- petroleum-based fuels. The bill states that alternative fuel options would include existing technology such as natural gas, hydrogen, bio-diesel, plugged-in electric and fuel cell, and "emerging fuels"
