The Solid Waste Policy, Planning & Grants Branch Office of Pollution Control of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (“MDEQ”) has issued a report titled Status Report on Solid Waste Management Facilities and Activities – Calendar Year 2014 (“Report”).
The annual status report is developed by MDEQ for the preceding year by the end of the next calendar year.
The Report summarizes and provides information on solid waste management and disposal activities conducted in the state.
The Report is based on information provided the agency by the individual facility owners and includes summary information for the solid waste facilities and activities. Such facilities and activities include:
- Municipal Solid Waste Landfills
- Non-Municipal Solid Waste Landfills
- Class 1 and Class 2 Rubbish Sites
- Industrial and Institutional Landfills
- Industrial and Institutional Rubbish Sites
- Transfer Stations
- Land Application Sites
- Processing Facilities
- Composting Facilities
- Beneficial Use of Non-Hazardous Solid Waste and/or By-Products
- Waste Tire Management
A section of the Report titled “Status Report Summary” notes that a total of 6,053,185 tons of solid waste was received for disposal during calendar year 2014 at commercial and non-commercial landfills and rubbish sites in Mississippi. Further, commercial solid waste disposal facilities disposed of 4,569,211 tons (75.48%) of waste and non-commercial solid waste disposal facilities disposed of 1,483,974 tons (24.52%) of waste.
As to the receipt of out of state waste, MDEQ indicates that Mississippi received a total of 708,709 tons of solid waste from out of state sources. This represents 11.71% of the total solid waste disposed during calendar year 2014. The Report also includes similar figures for:
- Transfer Stations
- Land Application Sites
- Processing Facilities
- Composting Facilities
- Beneficial Use Determinations
- Waste Tire Management Program
