A June 23rd Smart Electric Power Alliance article discusses the 12-megawatt solar project recently developed to supply power to weapons manufacturer Aerojet Rocketdyne’s (“Aerojet”) Camden, Arkansas facility.
The article is A Solar Story from Arkansas Shines Light on Q 1 Utility Scale Market and authored by Chirag Pansuriya and Ryan Edge.
A key focus of the article is the role of electric cooperatives in the Aerojet project. Ouachita Electric Cooperative (“OECC”) is Aerojet’s local utility and Arkansas Electric Cooperative (“AECC”) is the contracted power provider.
The article also notes the involvement of Southern Arkansas University Tech in the project. The school assisted the company in the project’s development.
The authors state that the project is significant because Aerojet is neither a big-box retailer nor an internet high-tech firm. These two types of energy consumers have apparently been to date the primary consumers of corporate renewable energy.
Nashville, Tennessee based solar developer Silicon Ranch Corporation built the plant under what is characterized as a unique 25-year PPA with both Aeroject and AECC.
The Aerojet project quadrupled the amount of solar power sources of energy generated in the State of Arkansas.
The authors address national solar powered trends in the first quarter and cite other potential upcoming projects. Included are prior year quarterly statistics for the solar market and a year-over-year comparison of utility-scale solar market growth.
