LITTLE ROCK, AR (Nov. 4, 2008) -Mitchell, Williams, Selig, Gates & Woodyard, P.L.L.C., a full-service law firm with offices in Arkansas and Texas, is proud to announce the recent election of attorney Allan Gates as a Fellow to The American College of Environmental Lawyers (ACOEL).
ACOEL is a professional association formed with the goal of bringing together lawyers distinguished by their experience and high standards in the practice of environmental law. Membership in the organization is by election only, and eligibility is limited to those who are recognized as leaders in their field and have predominantly practiced environmental law for 15 years or longer.
“Some of the best known and most experienced environmental lawyers from across the nation have come together to form this new college, the first of its kind in environmental law,” said Michele Corash, newly elected president of ACOEL and an environmental attorney at Morrison & Foerester in San Francisco. “Forming the College has allowed us to build a strong fellowship, share best practices and continue to strengthen this thriving practice area.”
Gates is a member in the Little Rock office of Mitchell Williams. His practice centers on environmental law and litigation. He serves as adjunct professor of Environmental Law at UALR School of Law and has been a guest lecturer on environmental law at the University of Arkansas Medical School, UALR graduate and undergraduate classes and in national, regional, and state seminars on environmental law and litigation. He is the author of several papers on environmental subjects. He has been elected to membership in the American Law Institute and is a member of the Environmental Law Institute.
Gates is a former Chair of the Arkansas Bar Association Environmental Law Section and a member of the Pulaski County, Arkansas, and American Bar Associations. He has also been selected for several years for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA, America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and the International Bar Association’s Who’s Who of Business Lawyers.
Receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1969 and his Juris Doctorate from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1972, Gates served as law clerk to Chief Judge Pat Mehaffy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit from 1972 to 1974 and to Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court from 1974 to 1975 before joining the firm.
