Mr. David O’Connor has an August 24th post in the blog Energy Technology Matters that discusses a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) ruling which it states will help ISO-New England (“ISO”) “more effectively manage congestion on its grid due to growing renewable energy generation.”
Mr. O’Connor also notes that because of the intermittent nature of renewable generation operators cannot predict when transmission lines might get overloaded. He states that this can result in generators of renewable power having to curtail their supply through what is characterized as a “cumbersome and inefficient manual system.”
ISO submitted a request for the FERC to approve an upgrade from a manual dispatch to an electronic management for wind and hydropower resources. The post notes that FERC granted ISO permission to use a modified electronic dispatch method called DNE Dispatch Points for wind and hydro resources classified as Intermittent Power Resources – those above 5MW.
