The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) Office of Inspector General (“OIG”) has issued a January 8th Project Notification that it plans to begin:
… preliminary research for an evaluation of the ambient air monitoring program within the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation (OAR).
Various methods and techniques are used to determine the quantity of a given pollutant in the ambient air for purposes of determining compliance with requirements such as the Clean Air Act National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
OIG states that its objective is to “determine whether selected air monitoring data in EPA’s Air Quality System (AQS) meet criteria established by the EPA”. Specific questions being addressed include:
- Do data revisions comply with EPA criteria?
- Do data exclusions or gaps comply with EPA criteria?
