The United States Geological Survey (“USGS”) issued a December 31st news release noting what it characterized as “historical Christmas flooding in Arkansas.”
The news release discusses the Arkansas flooding event over the Christmas holidays and USGS’s efforts to collect flood data.
USGS notes that at one point:
… more than 30 streamgages in Arkansas operated by the USGS experienced a “top 10” flood, meaning this flood event was one of the ten highest flooding events ever recorded at these streamgages.
Jonathan Gillip, a USGS hydrologist in Little Rock, is quoted as stating:
At some streamgages, particularly in the northwestern part of the state, we’ve seen water levels and data indicating this was one of the top one or two floods ever recorded by the USGS in that area …
The agency notes that rivers and stream levels at stream flow gaging in Arkansas can be observed by accessing the following link: http://ar.water.usgs.gov/.
One hundred and seventy streamgages are operated in Arkansas out of 7,500 located throughout the United States.
